SPAN Encourages New Mexico to Enact the “PFAS Protection Act”

On March 28, 2025, Kevin Fay, Executive Director of the Sustainable PFAS Action Network (SPAN), sent a letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham encouraging her to sign HB212, the “PFAS Protection Act,” to make New Mexico a leader in sustainable and effective PFAS policy. The bill is the result of a collaborative process with local stakeholders and forms an approach to PFAS management that best serves the state’s environment and economy.

HB212 takes into account issues other states have confronted when attempting PFAS legislation and contains many positive elements, including the start of a risk-based program and exemptions protecting some of the New Mexico’s largest job creators.

SPAN was formed to be a solutions-oriented coalition of responsible PFAS users and producers that support sustainable management policies to both protect public health and the environment while encouraging economic and technological progress. We are thankful that New Mexicans are represented and served by many policymakers who want the same thing.

While the bill will require some refinement in the future, the program outlined in HB212 will be a positive first step in a years-long effort to responsibly manage PFAS.
