Principled Stewardship
SPAN members are committed to the following principles that guide the responsible, science-based stewardship of PFAS compounds:
Consider responsible PFAS compound management solutions for scientifically identified persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) substances, avoiding restrictions for substances known to be acceptable for humans and the environment.
Support appropriate and effective reporting methodologies concerning the use of PFAS compounds and ensuring effective communication throughout the supply chain.
Support the substantial reduction of PFAS compounds identified as PBT substances in those applications where feasible and safer alternatives exist.
Utilize the best available environmental control technologies to minimize release and human exposure to those PFAS compounds identified as PBT substances.
Foster efforts to develop the science for identifying and assessing the properties of environmental degradants of specific PFAS compound formulations.
Our members agree that certain PFAS compound uses can and should be controlled when they present risks to the environment and human health risks and have commercially available substitutes.
