SPAN Statement on EPA PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Standard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, April 10, the Sustainable PFAS Action Network (SPAN) released the following statement in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s announcement for the final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS:

EPA’s actions to establish drinking water standards for PFOA, PFOS, and certain PFAA compounds is an important step toward protecting human health and the environment through science-driven, risk-based management solutions, consistent with other efforts being pursued as part of EPA’s PFAS Roadmap. EPA’s final standard acknowledges that not all PFAS are the same and must be managed according to the unique differences and risk among these chemicals,” said Sustainable PFAS Action Network (SPAN) Executive Director Kevin Fay. “However, we are concerned that implementation of this ambitious standard will require overcoming technical limitations regarding available detection capabilities and the substantial costs associated with nationwide deployment which threatens to impose costly obligations on ratepayers. The EPA’s federal leadership is absolutely critical to move forward with sustainable policies to reduce risk posed by certain PFAS compounds. This standard is an important step towards achieving the uniform federal approach needed to identify and remediate environmental contamination, properly identify risk profiles of commercially active PFAS compounds, and encourage innovation for alternatives to specific high-risk compounds.

ABOUT SPAN:

Formed in 2021, SPAN supports science- and risk-based policy approaches that recognize the unique differences of these compounds. Recognizing the essential role of PFAS compounds in enabling economic prosperity, delivering lifesaving equipment and medicine, and national security, among many other important applications, SPAN is committed to their sustainable use and responsible management.
