Sustainable PFAS Action Network Grows Membership

Coalition seeks to find responsible and science-based regulation of PFAS compounds

WASHINGTON – The Sustainable PFAS Action Network (SPAN), a coalition of industry stakeholders that advocate for responsible and science-based regulation of PFAS compounds, today announced the addition of three new members to the organization: The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), and the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). Together, SIA, AHRI, and AIA represent 760 companies across the globe.

“The Sustainable PFAS Action Network is a first-of-its-kind cross-industry coalition dedicated to promoting science- and risk-based policies to safely manage the production and use of PFAS compounds,” said Kevin Fay, Executive Director of SPAN. “Our members understand the essential role of PFAS compounds in a wide range of products that are not all the same – from lifesaving equipment and medicine to climate change mitigation. This organization is about finding sustainable policy solutions, and we are excited to have these new members join the effort.”

Formed in 2022, SPAN members recognize that America’s innovators and industries depend on the responsible management of PFAS compounds and that not all PFAS compounds present the safety concerns that a select group of them do. The organization supports science- and risk-based policy approaches that recognize the unique differences of these compounds. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified more than 10,000 materials that are likely to meet the broadest definition of PFAS. However, the number of compounds that are currently commercially manufactured or used in the United States today is closer to 700. Recognizing the essential role of PFAS compounds in enabling economic prosperity, delivery of lifesaving equipment and medicine, climate change mitigation, and national security, among many other important applications, SPAN is committed to their sustainable use and responsible management.
